Alcohol dependence – Signs and symptoms

Alcohol dependence is not as simple thing as it is often thought about. The condition can turn out very severe and fatal if proper eye is not given to its causes, symptoms and diagnosis. Along with creating problems in families and rendering people out of their normal social lives, alcohol dependence also causes disturbances to the body and mind. The basic cause of alcoholism can be either genetic, or environmental, or both. Symptoms of alcohol dependence are not as precise to be looked out for as in case of a typical physical or mental disease. Yet, there are a few signs that may help predict and alcohol dependence and gradually addiction to it.
Signs of alcohol dependence
- A person into this situation will always crave for alcohol and related beverages.
- The ability to reduce, avoid or stop the consumption of alcohol, involuntarily or voluntarily, is lost.
- The person experiences severe withdrawal symptoms even when refraining from alcohol for one instance.
- The tolerance of alcohol is increased and the ill effects of its consumption are generally masked and ignored.
The symptoms are different from warning signs of a condition of ill health. Let us discuss a few warning signs of alcoholism. Drinking early in the morning is definitely an unusual behavior for an occasional drinker. So, this can be noted as a warning sign. Drinking alone and not in social groups is another sign, pertaining to the offensive manner and quantity of drinking. Not ceasing to drink alcohol even after the point of intoxication is another warning sign. Temporary loss of memory and lack of attention are results of too much alcohol consumption. The most important factor – if a person drinks alcohol in an uncontrollable manner to deal with or sustain through the emotional problems, work pressure and other stressful situations in life, he is surely into alcohol dependence.
